Job Description

This role is responsible for evaluating life insurance applications, assessing risk, and helping determine appropriate coverage and pricing. The successful candidate will work closely with clients to communicate underwriting decisions and discuss complex case situations.

  • Conduct external audits for clients.
  • Act as an underwriting subject matter expert on projects with Actuarial or Data Science team members.
  • Participate in client meetings, including presenting studies or benchmarking results.
  • Attend industry conferences and meetings.

 

This role is ideal for an individual with strong analytical and communication skills and a passion for life insurance underwriting. The ideal candidate is eager to continuously learn, stay current with industry trends and regulatory changes, and bring a forward-thinking mindset to evaluating risk and shaping the future of underwriting. The successful candidate must also excel at prioritizing work and managing multiple assignments and tasks simultaneously.

  • Assess risk on facultative cases submitted by clients, in alignment with established key performance indicators, including cycle time and productivity, and within established underwriting guidelines.
  • Provide capacity and retrocession information to clients as requested.
  • Collaborate with retrocession partners as needed.
  • Communicate underwriting decisions to clients and engage as needed to discuss complex situations or adverse decisions.
  • Focus primarily on production underwriting work, with potential participation in project work such as external research, collaboration with Data Science and Actuarial teams on studies, and support with developing or revising underwriting guidelines and related communications.
  • Occasionally conduct client audits, including case reviews, analysis of results, development of feedback and insights, and presentation of findings to clients.
  • Provide guidance and support to lower-level underwriters, including co-signing cases as appropriate.

About You

  • Strong technical underwriting skills, including medical, non-medical, and financial underwriting knowledge.
  • Extensive knowledge of medical terminology and an understanding of health- and lifestyle-related risk factors.
  • Knowledge of applicable laws and regulations governing life insurance underwriting.
  • Ability to mentor junior underwriters and support the development of their technical underwriting skills, including medical, non-medical, and financial underwriting.
  • Experience working on high face amount and complex financial cases is required.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to clearly communicate underwriting decisions and provide additional context or rationale in response to client counterproposals.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with internal and external stakeholders on day-to-day work and project-based initiatives.
  • Minimum of seven years of life insurance underwriting experience with a direct carrier or reinsurer, with a current approval limit of $5 million or higher.
  • College degree or equivalent industry experience.
  • Must be working toward an industry designation or completing industry-related training courses.
