Job Description

Job Summary

This collaborative leadership role is focused on partnerships: internally with our actuarial innovation and underwriting teams, and externally with data and underwriting vendors and clients. 

This person will be responsible for the development, evaluation and advancement of data driven, forward-thinking underwriting solutions that support and strengthen our client relationships. 

The role will also include underwriting research, focused on industry benchmarking and ensuring our internal guidelines are up-to-date and relevant, while maintaining a strong risk management focus. 

This is a leadership role and will require extensive underwriting knowledge and the ability to work with a wide variety of people in the industry. It is highly visible, client‑facing, and central to our value proposition as a forward‑thinking reinsurance partner.

About the Role

Underwriting Innovation & Research 

  • Research emerging underwriting methodologies, third-party data and innovation trends
  • Identify opportunities to enhance underwriting effectiveness, efficiency and/or risk selection, particularly related to maximizing third-party data sources within the underwriting process
  • Design, pilot and evaluate innovative underwriting concepts, in conjunction with the actuarial innovation team and other PartnerRe associates
  • Develop and manage relationships with underwriting and data vendors, including identifying and assessing vendors for strategic partnerships

Enhance Client Relationships

  • Collaborate with our Business Development team to support clients’ needs by exploring their current challenges and developing and delivering solutions that will enhance their underwriting processes
  • Develop underwriting benchmarking and best practices that can be tailored for each individual clients’ needs
  • Engage with clients on specific underwriting pilots to showcase our value and enhance our partnership.

Underwriting Guidelines and Governance

  • Work with the SVP – Underwriting Solutions to ensure our internal underwriting guidelines are relevant, data supported, within market parameters and updated as needed
  • Work with global medical team to ensure our PAR Medical Manual is aligned with US market expectations

Production Underwriting

  • While rare, the role may require some production work, generally during times of unexpected absences or high volume. 

Work Expereince and Qualification

Technical Skills

  • Strong technical underwriting skills including medical, non-medical and financial knowledge.
  • Extensive knowledge of medical terminology and an understanding of risk factors related to health and lifestyle.
  • Knowledge of applicable laws and regulations governing life insurance underwriting.
  • Experience working with accelerated underwriting models and rules engines, including monitoring, and third-party data sources. 

Soft Skills

  • Proven ability to lead cross-functional initiatives and manage complex projects
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and relationship building skills
  • Strategic thinker, with a collaborative mindset and passion for underwriting innovation

Work Experience and Education

  • Minimum of 10 years of underwriting experience with a carrier / reinsurer
  • Leadership experience is required. 
  • Experience working with third party data, and/or underwriting vendors
  • College degree is required
  • Must have an UW industry designation (FALU, etc.) or be actively working towards obtaining such designation.
